In excess of twenty Olympic champions, mentors and additional global sports figures have signed a letter calling for a halt to the execution of a champion boxer and trainer, who is on death row in Iran.

Increasing Worldwide Condemnation

During rising worldwide anger over the nation's increasing application of executions as a tool of suppression, the forcefully phrased letter condemns the Iranian regime's decision to uphold the capital punishment of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The athlete, three decades old, from the city in north-east Iran, was arrested for taking part in nationwide protests in two thousand nineteen and accused of aiding an opposition group. He has spent half a decade in detention, where he has been tortured and confined in solitary confinement.

“Athletics is intended to inspire optimism, togetherness, and bravery,” the signatories wrote. “The death penalty of a champion for his beliefs is a direct assault on these values and a caution to any competitor who ventures to voice opinions.

Pattern of Executing Competitors

The statement pointed out that the boxer's situation was part of a pattern and highlighted Iran’s past of sentencing to death athletes for their views, for example a football captain, leader of the soccer squad, and Fourouzan Abdi, captain of the female volleyball side. In the year 2020, Navid Afkari, a 27-year-old Iranian wrestling champion, was put to death.

Additional supporters to the statement include a sailing champion, who led the inaugural female-only team in a global yacht race and was the first woman to receive a prestigious nautical honor; the ex- skipper of the Australian football team Craig Foster; and a sports figure, who was in the Iranian squad for the global tournament.

Arrest and Flawed Legal Process

The athlete was detained in the spring of 2020. The accusations against him entailed “causing deterioration on Earth through incendiarism and damage of state assets”. His sentence has been reversed twice but on the fourth of October it was confirmed on the third attempt. His court case was denounced as “deeply biased” by rights defenders and groups.

Urging to UN

The call to halt Vafaei Sani’s execution follows a 2023 appeal to the global human rights chief for freedoms, endorsed by in excess of one hundred human rights experts and organizations, demanding action to prevent the sports figure's execution.

Execution Crisis

Based on data, there is an “capital punishment escalation in Iran, which has reached shocking proportions”. In 2023, the government put to death at least over 850 people – a nearly half rise on the previous year. In the prior period, statistics showed nine hundred seventy-two executions, representing the peak figure since 2015. In excess of hundreds of people have been put to death so far in 2025.
